Government tightens noose on internet sex offenders
On Tuesday 6th February 2007 the government announced their intention to require registered sex offenders to place their internet nicknames, email addresses and site access details on their sex offender registrations. Failure to do so or to notify any changes/additions will result in imprisonment.
This follows the recent landmark case where 3 men were imprisoned for conspiring to abduct a minor over the internet. This is first time that a successful prosecution has been delivered based on internet chat only prior to the committing of a physical offence.
It has always been and remains a primary goal of UKChatterbox to ensure that our site is as safe as possible for chatters, for this reason we fully support this move. We already have measures in place to detect and report suspected illegal activity of this nature as well as not allowing file transfers between users, and other measures. The existing procedures and reporting facilities will be both enhanced and streamlined once the new legislation is in place.
While sex offenders are not welcome on UKCB at all we realise that realistically all sites offering chat and profile services are liable to have a percentage of such people using them. We will always monitor, investigate and if suspicions remain report all such users to the authorities.
In addition to the measures that we have in place we also encourage users of our service to report any concerns or suspicions, particularly where minors are involved to query@ukchatterbox.com Please be diligent and if in doubt report.
